Bytes Converter

Convert digital storage units between bytes, KB, MB, and GB quickly and accurately. Perfect for file sizes, storage capacity, and data transfer calculations.

How it works

How to Convert Bytes

Our bytes converter makes it easy to convert between different digital storage units. Enter a value and select the input unit, and you'll see conversions to all other units.

Example 1: File Size

Convert 1,024 bytes to KB. Since 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, 1,024 bytes = 1 KB. A 1 KB file contains 1,024 bytes.

Example 2: Storage Capacity

Convert 500 MB to GB. Since 1 GB = 1,024 MB, 500 MB = 500 ÷ 1,024 = 0.488 GB. A 500 MB file is approximately 0.49 GB.

Example 3: Large File

Convert 2 GB to bytes. Since 1 GB = 1,024 MB = 1,048,576 KB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, 2 GB = 2,147,483,648 bytes.

Conversion Factors

All conversions use binary (1024-based) system:

  • 1 KB (Kilobyte) = 1,024 bytes
  • 1 MB (Megabyte) = 1,024 KB = 1,048,576 bytes
  • 1 GB (Gigabyte) = 1,024 MB = 1,073,741,824 bytes

Common File Sizes

  • 1 KB = 1,024 bytes (small text file)
  • 1 MB = 1,024 KB (medium image file)
  • 1 GB = 1,024 MB (large video file)
  • 4 GB = 4,096 MB (typical DVD capacity)

Important Notes

Note that we use binary (1024-based) conversion, which is standard for computer storage. Some systems use decimal (1000-based) conversion, but binary is more accurate for digital storage calculations.
